Simple Silver Scrap Recycling - 30th May

£120.00Price

As precious metal prices continue to rise we need to be sensible with our silver and guarded with our gold. Join Alys to learn about the different types of waste generated at the bench - scraps, lemel and sweeps - and how to reuse them in low tech and simple ways to make the most of your materials. No rolling mill? No problem. We'll show you how you can recycled your silver scrap in your own workshop without having to buy expensive tools or equipment. You'll learn methods that use the equipment you already have to create new pieces from your waste as well as explore how to recycle your metal if you you decide to buy some new tools to do it. This class is more about process than product so bring along your scrap and find out how to turn that trash into treasure.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

Who is this class suitable for?

Improvers and more experienced jewellers.

What will I make?

You might make a selection of samples and experiments using your scrap. You'll also make a small charcoal crucible for melting metal using butane torches.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to sort and refine your precious metal waste into scrap, lemel and sweeps and learn what can be done with each category. You'll explore some low tech ways to melt down, cast and forge out your scrap back into useable metal as well as what tools and equipment you might want to invest in to recycle metal on a larger scale. You'll also learn how and where to send scrap off for refining to make the best of the bits you can't use. We will cover simple techniques such as pour casting, granulation, fusing, charcoal casting and forging as well as discussing more advanced methods such a rolling sheet and drawing wire.

What is included?

All tools and equipment are provided. Please bring your precious metal scrap - off cuts and leftovers - with you to play with. Not all scrap will be useable on the day but it's definitely worth bringing it to see what to do with it. Silver scrap will be available to buy at the workshop if required.
